I call it "mental auto pilot" and I suspect it's from not really using your brain while driving. As a vehicle passes you your brain kicks in just enough to adjust your speed to match. Sometimes these idiots will camp in your blind spot, right next to you or pretend they are a yo-yo and speed up then slow down over and over so you keep passing each other. I use cruise control as much as possible to avoid driving like this.
