About the Federal Highway Administration resource

The Federal Highway Administration is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Its Office of Freight Management and Operations publishes truck-parking research, planning resources and links to federal programs. The resource is useful to drivers researching the parking shortage, fleet managers, public agencies, engineers and communities considering additional parking capacity.

FHWA explains that insufficient safe parking can leave tired drivers searching for rest locations or stopping in unsafe areas. Its material supports improvements to parking infrastructure. It is a research and policy resource rather than a booking service or roadside-dispatch provider.

Jason’s Law survey and parking data

The official page links to the Jason’s Law surveys and comparative assessments, including the 2018–2019 survey results published in December 2020. Downloadable GIS files describe facility locations and parking capacity from the survey periods. These historical datasets should not be interpreted as current vacancy information.

Use the reports to understand regional needs and the history of the national parking effort. For tonight’s stop, check the selected facility’s current rules and availability through its operator or the appropriate state traveler-information service. A mapped facility does not establish that a space is available or that overnight parking is permitted for your equipment.

National Coalition on Truck Parking

The coalition brings together public and private stakeholders to discuss parking needs and solutions. Its resource page includes annual meeting notes, reports and working-group products on parking capacity, technology and data, funding and finance, and state, regional and local coordination.

Specific products address involvement of shippers and receivers, low-cost parking facilities, parking-availability detection, public-private partnerships, and local planning and zoning. These resources can help a driver association, fleet or community prepare an informed discussion with transportation planners. Meeting materials are dated records; check each document’s publication date before applying its findings to a current project.

Development handbook, training and federal funding

The truck-parking landing page links to the Truck Parking Development Handbook, training information, a publications clearinghouse and the FHWA/FMCSA memorandum on eligibility of federal funds for commercial-vehicle parking. Project sponsors should use the latest linked documents and consult the responsible program office about eligibility and requirements.

When raising a parking concern, describe the corridor, recurring time of day, equipment involved and the practical consequences of the shortage. Clearly distinguish an observed recurring problem from an estimate of available spaces. A useful project inquiry identifies the agency or community involved and the type of guidance needed.

Verified program and agency contacts

Program contacts handle policy and resource questions. Contact the individual facility for parking access and service questions; the federal headquarters address is not a truck-parking destination.
