FMCSA: CDL, Hours of Service, Driver Records and Complete Contact Guide

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is the U.S. Department of Transportation agency responsible for commercial motor-vehicle safety oversight. Drivers and carriers use its official resources for federal rules, safety records, registration, training and medical-certification information. This expanded guide brings the directory’s related FMCSA resources together without creating duplicate agency profiles.

Carrier research: SAFER, licensing and SMS

SAFER provides a starting point for a carrier’s public information. The licensing and insurance system covers operating-authority and insurance information. CSA and the Safety Measurement System address safety performance and intervention priorities. Their purposes differ: a safety-performance indicator is not the same as an agency-issued safety rating, and a company name alone may not identify the correct operating entity.

Ask a recruiter or broker for the legal company name and USDOT/MC identifiers, check the appropriate system, and record the retrieval date. Verify any unresolved issue with the agency or carrier before drawing conclusions from an incomplete record.

Driver records, corrections and Clearinghouse

The Pre-Employment Screening Program provides access to driver crash and inspection history for screening. DataQs lets users request and track a review of federal or state safety data believed incomplete or incorrect. Keep the report identifiers and supporting documentation, and follow the review process rather than assuming a general phone call changes a record.

The Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse is a separate system for covered drug-and-alcohol program violations and related processes. Use its driver learning center for account, consent and return-to-duty information. Do not share account credentials with a recruiter or an unofficial support provider.

Training, medical and regulatory questions

Use the Training Provider Registry to research listed providers, then ask each provider about course scope, fees, enrollment and state requirements. Use the National Registry to locate certified medical examiners and the agency’s medical resources for qualification questions.

For a specific hours-of-service exception, medical determination, cargo requirement or licensing issue, consult the current official rule and the responsible agency or qualified professional. This directory organizes contact routes; it does not replace an individualized determination.
